MEXICO CITY: Exports from Arizona increased by nearly 9 percent in 2014, which was about triple the national average. A report released by several state agencies, including the University of Arizona, shows the state’s exports to Mexico was a big driver of that growth.
George Hammond is the director of the Economic Business Research Center at the University of Arizona. He said 41 percent of goods produced in Arizona went to Mexico in 2014, which is a 22 percent increase from the year before.
“We saw a major increase in our exports of minerals and ores, which is primarily copper,” said Hammond. “But the increase in exports to Mexico was actually pretty broad based.”
Hammond said economic growth in Mexico is one of the factors behind the increase.
