CANBERRA: Australian federal police arrested a 47-year-old man with two kilograms of cocaine allegedly hidden in metal car parts at Perth Airport. In a statement, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said the man arrived from Kuala Lumpur and his luggage was screened.

“Officers X-rayed two car parts found in the man’s luggage which revealed irregularities,” the statement said. “White powder was found inside the metal casing of the car parts, which initially tested positive for cocaine.” The man has been charged with importing a marketable quantity of a controlled drug.

Australian Customs regional commander Rod O’Donnell said the seizure had come about because of joint intelligence with the AFP. “Our highly professional officers are experts at identifying complex concealments such as this,” Mr O’Donnell said. “People who attempt to import illicit drugs face combined federal law enforcement, with heavy penalties.” The maximum penalty includes 25 years’ jail and an $850,000 fine.
