PERTH: Belgian Gardens State School is one of 310 public schools in Australia that are part of the Reef Guardian program.
Hokulea crew members visited the school’s indoor aquarium tanks – the school has a successful clownfish breeding program that teaches each of their students the importance of protecting the Great Barrier Reef and that they can make a difference.
“We’re becoming a lead school in sharing our experiences in getting the kids to teach other kids, which we think is a powerful tool,” said Brett Murphy, a teacher at Belgian Gardens State School. “So they’re becoming guardians themselves and teaching these students from other schools about that we think is important about the Great Barrier Reef and how we can protect it and help it.”
And the students in Australia are learning much more than about the reef.
“It’s kind of like the blue print that we’re looking for as we go around the planet. I think today is a celebration of the kinds of schools we need to prepare children for the 21st Century,” said Nainoa Thompson of the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
