MULTAN: Local Markets of entire South Punjab including Multan are facing severe shortages of vegetables and fruits due to the prevailing political impasse caused by the Azadi and Inqilab marches of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT).
The transporters from Upper Punjab and Sindh are not supplying vegetables and fruits to markets of South Punjab including Multan due to the political turmoil. The transporters from different province and cities are not ready to ply their vehicles on roads to avoid any mishap and the suspension of vegetable and fruit supply from Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhawa and Upper Punjab has triggered severe shortage of vegetables and fruit.
On the other hand, local consumers are worried due to the exorbitant prices being charged by vegetables and fruit sellers to exploit the situation as they are well aware that on the one hand, fresh supply was suspended while on the other hand, the government has solely focused on dealing with the crisis.
The last week which coincided with the 68th Independence Day of Pakistan did not go well for the public and small traders as the political turmoil shrank trade and economic activities.
On the other hand, the situation is also not ideal for the tax department because due to limited business activities they are facing difficulty in collection of taxes and likely to miss the revenue target for the current month.
It is feared that if the political situation remained uncertain any further, the people will have to face more problems and their businesses will slump further.
Small traders and local manufacturers are also worried about the current political and economic situation of the country and the Anjuman-e-Tajran Pakistan has appealed to all the political parties to exhibit wisdom and resolve all issue amicably.
