FRANCE: Elon Musk’s spaceflight company SpaceX can now compete to launch national security missions for the Air Force, and that’s a sea change in the world of commercial space.
The authorization of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket for these missions effectively opens up a whole new, lucrative market for the private spaceflight company, which was the first commercial spaceflight provider to fly cargo missions to the International Space Station.
It also ends the Air Force’s sole reliance on one launch provider — United Launch Alliance, a partnership between Lockheed Martin and Boeing. This has been a major goal for Musk in order to grow SpaceX.
