The Border Security Force (BSF) has seized a huge quantity of contraband drugs worth over Rs 13 crore in the areas of BSF’s Guwahati frontier region in past one year.
The BSF personnel also apprehended 27 Bangladeshi smugglers – most were involved in cattle smuggling during this period.
Inspector General of BSF Guwahati Frontier Piyush Mordia on Saturday said, “It is becoming easy for BSF personnel to check cross border illegal activities after we started border domination with the help of electronic surveillance. It helps BSF personnel to identify the people and location when they take advantage of fog and darkness to execute cross border illegal activities.”
He further said, “During the period of December 2018 to November 2019, we apprehended 27 Bangladeshi nationals and 185 Indian nationals who were involved in some kinds of smuggling, majorly cattle smuggling. 12 Bangladeshi migrant labourers were also apprehended during the period.”
“During this period, we had seized 17,344 cattle heads, 33,376 bottles of phensedyl, 20,242 Yaba tablets, almost 70,000 Sukhi tablets, 1073.05 kg of ganja, 2.19 kg of opium worth of over Rs 13 crore,” the BSF official added.
It is to be mentioned that, BSF has taken over the task of erecting physical barrier on entire international border to make it impregnable for any kind of illegal infiltration.
However, there are stretches, which are difficult to be covered by physical fencing and hence, decision was taken to install technological solution on these gaps covering an area of about 2026 km.
The technological solution is called Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS) which is a combination of surveillance devices, data backbone, communication network and command control centre.
The CIBMS multiplies human surveillance by sensors surveillance and ensure that any attempt of infiltration does not go without detection.
