The MV Courage is docked in England while official assess the extent of the damage, military officials told the Virginian-Pilot on Friday. They also said the ship was carrying 461 automobiles and 1,668 shipments of household items owned by U.S. service members, as well as commercial cargo.
The “roll-on, roll-off” vessel was sailing from Germany to Baltimore and Charleston on June 3 when the fire started in one of the cargo holds, according to the report. No one was hurt.
The U.S. Surface Deployment and Distribution Command told the newspaper that inspectors are scheduled to board the ship this weekend to assess the damage.
The U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency has issued a “prohibition notice” to prevent the MV Courage from being moved from the Southampton port until it is deemed safe to do so, the website www.gcaptain.com reported.
The ship is owned by American Roll-On Roll-Off Carriers of Woodcliff Lake, N.J.
