SANTIAGO: Chilean fruit exports recorded a 4.3% increase in volume, but only 2.8% in value compared to the same period of 2014, as reported by the Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (ODEPA).

“This decline in value has mostly been the result of the low export volumes of apples and avocados,” stressed ODEPA. In the case of avocados, the drop is related to the annual variation that affects the fruit.

However, “so far in the 2015/16 season (August to November) almost 53,000 tonnes of avocados have been exported, a similar figure to that achieved in the 2013/14 season, which could point to the season registering an upward trend; however, it is an early harvest compared to previous years,” points out ODEPA in its report.

The ODEPA has also assured that international fruit prices are dropping, mainly for kiwis, nectarines, peaches, plums, pears, mandarins, cherries, oranges and walnuts.

According to the report, the United States continues to be the most important destination for Chilean fruit exports, followed by the Netherlands and China.
