MEXICO CITY: Constellation Brands President and CEO Robert Sands was in Mexico meeting with President Enrique Peña Nieto to talk about further expansion plans by the Victor-based wine and beer maker.

The company is working on a $2 billion project to increase its Nava brewery’s production and expand its glass plant. The plants, along with an office in Mexico City, are expected to employ 2,500 when all the work is completed.

“Constellation Brands is proud to be in Mexico, and we are here to stay,” Sands said in a statement. “Our commitment and investments in our Mexican beer portfolio have resulted in record-breaking growth and accelerated U.S. consumer demand that is far ahead of market trends. We are thrilled about the investments we are making in Mexico because we believe Mexican high-end beer will continue to grow and be a leading beer segment in the U.S. for years to come.”

Constellation increased its presence in Mexico after buying Group Modelo’s U.S. beer business for $4.75 billion, and picking up a Mexican brewery and control of beer importing business Crown Imports LLC, which includes Pacifico and the Chinese beer Tsingtao.

Sands also met with other Mexican executives.

“Thank you for trusting Mexico, thank you for believing in Mexico,” Peña Nieto said. “We wish the company great success and will support your business plans as you continue to grow.”
