Customs Court awards jail term to suspects in injections, mobile phones smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court convicted suspects namely Zeeshan Ali Awan son of Sikandar Ali and Muhammad Aamir son of Sain Muhammad Sohail for six months and Rs500,000 fine, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle 10,000 Boostin/somatotropin injections and mobile phones.

On June 22, 2019, above mentioned suspects appeared before the court along with their counsel and moved petition, after the hearing, court framed charge against them as they accepted their crime and left themselves on the mercy of the court.

After hearing the court ordered, “I, therefore, keeping in view of the reasons and taking the lenient view convict the above mentioned suspects for a period of six months giving benefit of section 382 and fine of Rs500,000, if the fine amount is not paid both the accused shall suffer for further two years more”.

According to investigation officer of Customs Preventive, on a credible information they intercepted the suspects at International Arrival, JIAP, Karachi and recovered foreign origin hormones injections which induce cows to produce more milk.

He further submitted that one laptop, Samsung S8, Samsung S7 edge, Nokia 105, Samsung SM-G950F also were recovered from suspect worth Rs30 million.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2 (s) 16, 139 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (89) & (70) of section 156(i) ibid read with baggage rules notified vide SRO-666(1) ibid and other related laws.
