NEW YORK: United States’ Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials see a lot of ingenious methods drug smugglers use to get their contraband into the country, and to get cocaine into the US hidden in fish from Jamaica has made the top 10 list for 2015.
Back in June, CBP officers at Miami International Airport seized over two pounds of cocaine concealed inside fried fish, which was in the luggage of a passenger arriving from the Caribbean island.
During an X-ray examination of the passenger’s luggage, the officers noticed anomalies in some of the cooked fish. Upon further examination, they observed that the bellies of some of the fish were sewn together and certain fish felt thicker than the others. They subsequently discovered approximately 2.3 pounds of cocaine.
That find made the list compiled by the CBP – in no particular order – along with spools of cable filled with marijuana; 1,455 pounds of marijuana hidden among watermelons; a semi-submersible craft carrying more than 16,870 pounds of cocaine; a human smuggling operation; methamphetamines hidden in shoes; and prohibited food items, among other seizures.
“The list illustrates the important role CBP’s officers and agents play in protecting the nation against threats to communities across the country, as well as enforcing the nation’s immigration laws,” the CBP said.
It added that the seizures represented demonstrate the various ways transnational criminal organizations try to smuggle narcotics and people into the country on the border or at a port of entry; agricultural threats found among thousands of meat, plant materials or animal products processed daily; and the efforts of CBP with other law enforcement agencies to stop drug trafficking.
