A drug smuggling passenger who claimed to be suffering from swollen veins has lost his appeal against a 4-year-jail term and deportation punishment.

The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced him to four years behind bars to be followed by deportation. He sought to challenge the verdict but the Appeals Court upheld it.

Upon his arrival at Terminal-2, an Emirati corporal suspected his uneasy movement as “he was pacing nervously.” The corporal monitored him and requested Emirati Inspector SF to subject him to a search.

He posed resistance and refused to let them see the nature of the swelling. The officers decided to have him go through the scanning device. SF said they “spotted strange substances under his clothes.”

The corporal added: “When we asked him what he was stashing, he insisted he was suffering from varicose veins.” He refused to remove his clothes and show his alleged affected areas.

He declined to follow inspection orders until several airport inspectors were summoned to seize him and remove a plastic bag that he had hidden there. It contained reddish pills and a dark substance (hashish).

On being questioned, he told inspectors the pills were for personal consumption but insisted he was not aware how the dark substance found its way into the plastic bag. He later confessed before prosecutors that hashish was also for personal consumption.
