TAIPEI: The National Taxation Bureau of Taipei (NTBT) has said that refunds are available to foreigners who undertake working holidays in Taiwan and stay for 183 days or more.

The NTBT has provided new guidance because it became aware, after telephone inquiries from Australian and Japanese taxpayers, that there have been rumors that those staying in Taiwan for working holidays are ineligible for tax refunds.

The agency pointed out that foreigners who engage in working holidays in Taiwan should apply for a short-term visa, instead of an Alien Resident Certificate. Employers then withhold income tax of 18 percent from their salaries, based on the non-resident regulations in the tax code.

Any foreigner who stays for 183 days or longer should go to their district tax office to file a tax return before leaving the country to obtain a tax refund.
