HELSINKI: The Finnish language daily Kainuun Sanomat stated that the Regional State Administrative Agency for Northern Finland has granted the nickel mining company Talvivaara a permit to build a discharge pipe. Talvivaara Sotkamo subsidiary had applied for a permit to construct approximately 20 kilometre water discharge pipe from its mining areas to Nuasjärvi. The discharge pipe is expected to solve the water management problems facing the mine.
The newspaper reported that the agency on Wednesday made a decision to grant the permit. The newspaper, however, did not receive confirmation of the report from either the regional administrative agency or the bankruptcy estate of Talvivaara.
Similarly, environmental counsellor Sami Koivula did not confirm the report to news agency STT. He did, however tell STT that the matter was resolved on Wednesday but said the announcement of the decision will be made on Wednesday.
