NEW YORK: The construction of first phase of Louisiana International Deep Water Gulf Transfer Terminal, which is the first deep-water port in USA for offshore transshipment, can be completed until the end of 2016. The first phase of the project includes building of complex for transshipment of bulk cargo, which costs estimate to 250 million USD.
The project managers held a special press conference this week and stated that funding for the first phase is secured and construction will be completed until the end of next year. The whole project for building of first deep-water port in USA for offshore transshipment includes also construction of terminals for handling LNG and containers with total estimated investment of 10 billion USD. The port will be used by ocean going vessels, which draft is too large to pass through Mississippi River.
The demand for building of Louisiana International Deep Water Gulf Transfer Terminal came after expansion of the Panama Canal, which will allow passing of cargo ships with draft more than 15.00 m, compared to current 12.00 m. This will cause big problems for big vessels, as the maximum draft at Mississippi River is 13.50 m. After building the deep-water port for offshore transshipment, will be solved the problem with the insufficient draft of the river and will open US doors to the giant container ships and bulk carriers.
Before starting the construction of the deep-water port in USA, the investors should get approval from the US authorities and Coast Guard.
