DUBLIN: A €50m plan for Foynes port, announced by Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe .Foynes port to capitalise on the Shannon estuary port’s ability to handle world’s largest ships
Shannon Foynes Port Company will begin the second phase of a seven-year quayside infrastructure development later this month to fill in 3.45 acres on the port’s east jetty.
Preliminary works to link the east and west jetties have already begun.A third and final phase will add 35,000 square metres to the port and additional berthage.
The Co Limerick port will then be able to berth 40,000-ton vessels directly alongside the quay, leading to faster turnaround times. The plan could create 3,000 jobs. SFPC chief executive Pat Keating said the amount of goods passing through Foynes is almost back to the peak of 2006.
The very fact that this is the first major infrastructure in any seaport in Ireland since the 1990’s speaks volumes about the growth trends,” he added.
