French shipping giant invests US $ 2.5m in Sri Lanka to set up BPO unit

COLOMBO: CMA-CGM Shared Service Centre Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., a unit of the largest French shipping line CMA-CGM commenced business process outsourcing (BPO) operations last week investing US $ 2.5 million.

“CMA-CGM’s investment is most welcome in Sri Lanka, and overdue by one decade,” Highways and Investment Promotion Deputy Minister Eran Wickremaratne spoke as he declared the company open.

He stated that CMA/CGM, a Fortune 500 company, will benefit considerably from Sri Lanka’s greatest asset, her geographical position. The company’s annual revenue in Sri Lanka is expected to exceed US$ 4 million.

Wickremaratne also appreciated the move, since the government is committed to increasing the human capital levels in the country.

The company has already recruited and trained over 125 young graduates; mainly CIMA and ICA, and will be creating 700 job opportunities in the country by the end of 2016.

“(They) are part of a journey for Sri Lanka that is just beginning,” CMA- CGM Vice President Christian Krarup stressed the importance of the project.

He commended the support received from the Board of Investment, the Ministry of Investment Promotion and their local partner, the Hayleys Group, which owns 10 percent of the shares in CMA-CGM Shared Service Centre Lanka.

CMA – CGM is the 3rd largest shipping company in the world, present in 150 countries through its network of over 650 agencies that employ more than more than 20,000 worldwide.

With a young and diversified fleet of 445 vessels, the CMA CGM Group serves 400 of the world’s 521 commercial ports, and operates in every one of the world’s seas.
