HARROW: Scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) have revealed that the Siberia’s Yamal Peninsula, which is signified as the end of the world is becoming increasingly porous.
In the region, a crater with a width of 260 feet was reported last year and now with the help of satellite imagery scientists have reported the emergence of about 30 new ones. Following the discovery of the first Yamal crater, nine more have appeared in the region. The crater called B2 is apparently flanked by 20 water-filled “baby craters”, according to the reports.
Vasily Bogoyavlensky, deputy director of the RAS-affiliated Oil and Gas Research Institute is expecting to find even more craters.
Dr. Bogoyavlensky stated “I would compare this with mushrooms: when you find one mushroom, be sure there are few more around. I suppose there could be 20 to 30 craters more.” The reason behind the appearance of these chasms is still unknown. Some of the residents of the region have reported to have seen a flash near one of the craters whereas those in the Yamal district have reported tremors. However, according to the Russian scientists the culprit is methane.
