NEW YORK: GM is introducing Apple CarPlay capability for smartphones in a pair of 2016 Buick models, the Regal and LaCrosse, and also in some GMC Sierra models at the beginning of the model year, followed by all Sierra, Canyon and Yukon models later in the year.

Android Auto capability will also be added later in the year.

The technology integrates navigation, hands-free text messaging, contact lists and entertainment apps for news or music.

Information is projected onto an eight-inch-screen using GM’s “IntelliLink” system, though most apps can be activated by voice commands through a steering wheel button, in order to protect against distracted driving.

Apple CarPlay enables drivers to make calls, send and receive messages and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by Siri. It is compatible with iOS 7.1 or higher.

Android Auto uses Google Maps, Google Now, and an audio/messaging app including WhatsApp, Skype, Google Play Music, and Spotify and podcast players. It requires a phone on Android Lollipop 5.0 or higher.

“Drivers now have a simple and safe way to have all the conveniences of their mobile devices in the vehicle and at their fingertips,” Mike Speranzini, brand director, Buick in Canada, said in a statement.

Both systems complement the OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with Wi-Fi hotspot that is offered in all 2016 Buicks. Encore and Enclave. The hotspot is on whenever the vehicle is on and comes with a three-month/three gigabyte data trial.
