NEW YORK: Google has got a new patent on a system that would filter pop culture spoilers on a social media app. It’s too early to know if this would be applied to other networks like Twitter or Facebook, but it’s probably a safe bet to see it pop up on Google+ in the future.
Quora alerted us to the patent, which will allow the social network to block out spoilers for books, TV and movies that you read or watch. The program uses information about what you post to the social network about what your watching or reading then tries to determine how far into that piece of fiction you are through an algorithm. Something like the Netflix suggestion feature or target ad codes. Then, if your friend posts something that’s from the future of the TV/movies/book you’re enjoying, a spoiler warning will block the content in your browser or app and you’ll have to click through. That’s an interpretation of the actual patent on file, which briefly explains itself as a system for “processing content spoilers.”
