NEW YORK: The Mountain View firm will launch the latest iteration of its mobile OS, which is currently known by the code name of Android M.

Android Police was the first to highlight a reference to Android M on the conference’s official schedule, though Google promptly removed the mention.

Assuming Google will maintain its tradition of naming each version of Android after a sugary treat, from Apple Pie to Lollipop, bloggers are already placing bets on the official name of the latest edition: Will it be Marshmallow, Muffin, M&M, or perhaps even the trendy Macaron?

The follow-up to Lollipop

Released in fall 2014, Android Lollipop brought about a major change in terms of interface, with smoother transitions between apps, but also in terms of the ability to sync multiple devices. The OS makes it easier to switch between devices, picking up tasks where you left off and accessing saved content such as music, photos, apps and recent searches. Lollipop also enables the creation of multiple user accounts and an extension of battery life by up to 90 minutes per charge.

Six months after its launch, Lollipop is available on just 9.7 per cent of Android devices, compared to 39.8 per cent for KitKat and 39.2 per cent for Jelly Bean, according to Google’s latest data, updated May 4.
