The Greek-owned fleet and the number of vessels under the Greek flag were slightly reduced during the last twelve months, according to data included in the 32nd report of the Greek Shipping Cooperation Committee, published earlier this week.

As of March 6, 2019, the number of the vessels using the Greek flag was 671, reduced by 52 vessels, compared to last year’s data.

This wasn’t just a Greek but a European trend in general though, as both Malta and Cyprus lost a significant number of vessels (7 and 26 respectively).

On the contrary, states like Liberia or the Marshal Islands added more vessels to their registry.

In terms of capacity, measured in Dead Weight Tonnage (DWT) and in Gross Register Tonnage (GT), the Greek fleet over the last twelve months saw a reduction of 2,376,000 DWT and 1,121,933 GT.

These figures represent a small portion of the total capacity of the Greek fleet though, as their overall capacity reached the figures of 339,549,357 DWT and 198,164,080 GT.

In terms of the number of vessels, the Greek fleet represents 7.2 percent of the total number of vessels in the world.

In terms of capacity though, it’s significantly larger. Measuring the Dead Weight Tonnage, the Greek fleet represents 13.4 percent of the globe’s total and 15.9 percent when the Gross Register Tonnage is measured.
