GEORGETOWN: A senior police officer and three constables were arraigned for allegedly received a GUY$6 million bribe to prevent police from seizing GUY$18 million worth of cocaine and charging a man who was allegedly in possession of the illicit substance.
Assistant Superintendent, Terrence Brown pleaded not guilty and was granted GUY$250,000 bail by City Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan. However, the three constables- Ray Drepaul Saul of Eversham Village, 26-year-old Trevon McKenzie of Princeton Village, Corentyne, and 42-year-old Shawn McPhoy of 174 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt- were refused bail and remanded to prison. The constables pleaded not guilty.
The Assistant Superintendent of Police and the Constables were have to appear at the Whim Magistrates Court on October 12.
Brief facts of the prosecution’s case are that between September 10 and 11 at Salton Village, Corentyne Berbice, they corruptly obtained from Renison Park the sum of GUY$6 M as inducement to prevent him from being charged with possession of narcotics.
Park was not charged for the drug offence because, according to police, the cocaine was released by the police patrol and handed over to a man at Skeldon who took it across the Corentyne River to Suriname.
