GEORGETOWN: Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) agents have foiled a plot by a number of persons to smuggle cocaine out of Guyana by swallowing the narcotic, according to a top official.
Head of the CANU, James Singh said two Guyanese men were late night arrested at hotel and one of them has been admitted to a city hospital because he allegedly ingested a number of cocaine pellets.
Singh could not immediately say which country the man was due to travel to and when, but it was clear that anti-drug agents had prevented the cocaine from reaching either the Cheddi Jagan or Ogle International Airport.
“The males were found with a quantity of cocaine pellets. The exact weight of the cocaine is yet to be determined since one of the men had swallowed some and in currently under guard at a city hospital,” he said.
In the past, cocaine smugglers have slipped through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and caught mainly at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.
