A strategic port in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province will be connected through Afghanistan and Central Asia to Russia, an official says.

“Gwadar is going to be connected through Afghanistan and Central Asia to Russia. We see other regional ports as complementary to Gwadar,” a senior military official said on Thursday.

Quetta Corps Commander Lt. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa, addressing an event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, called Balochistan the victim of terrorism.

He said Pakistan had ultimately realised it had to manage its borders and started constructing a fence along Durand Line — a project opposed by Afghanistan.

Saudi Arabia had evinced an interest in investing $10 billion in CPEC, he said, adding Gwadar offered an opportunity to cut time and cost of logistics for trade in the region.

Chief Minister Jam Kamal said Balochistan’s natural resources also offered opportunities to Afghanistan. CPEC can bring up new business ventures from China.
