HONG KONG: A health alert has been issued for the Port Macquarie-Hastings area due to a spate of algal blooms.Water testing in the Camden Haven River, Googly’s Lagoon and the Hastings River at Settlement Point has detected marine blue green algae
If you see any unusually coloured water or algae in public places, please let us know
Matt Rogers, Port Macquarie Hastings Council
The algae Trichodesmium is commonly known as ‘sea sawdust’.
The blooms are due to the current warm weather conditions.
Algae grows in rivers, beaches, lagoons, lakes or creeks and is seen as patches of unusually-coloured water.
The algae can range in colour, from pale brown or light green, to dark green and dark brown.
Over time it can settle on sand or along the high water mark leaving a scum that then decomposes and becomes quite smelly.
The Port Macquarie Hastings Director of Environment Matt Rogers said it is important for people to avoid sitting or swimming in water containing algae or touching or swallowing large amounts of algal scum.
“It’s best to avoid areas where the water appears different to normal, or where there is visible algal scum at or near the high tide mark on sand or lagoon banks,” he said
“If you see any unusually coloured water or algae in public places, please let us know.”
