The annual financial impact of the port operations adds up to about 4.1 billion euros annually, according to a recent Port of Helsinki impact assessment carried out by the Brahea Centre at the University of Turku.

The operations related to the Port of Helsinki, together with their multiplier effect, provided work for more than 25,000 people, said a press release.

The Port of Helsinki is the largest port for general cargo and passenger traffic in Finland. In many sectors, companies’ business is connected to the Port’s operations and the cargo and passenger traffic going through the Port.

The indirect effects of the Port of Helsinki are significantly larger than what is presented in the assessment and extend to a wider area, covering almost all of Finland.

The volume of foreign goods traffic going through the Port of Helsinki is, in tonnes, approximately 14 per cent of the traffic of all Finnish ports. With unitised cargo, however, the proportion of the Port of Helsinki is significantly larger: approximately 40 per cent. The value of the goods is 43–54 billion euros, i.e. 40–50% of the value of all maritime transport in Finland.

The Port of Helsinki’s proportion of container transport was 31.9% of the Twenty Equivalent Unit (TEU) transported via all ports of Finland.

The Port of Helsinki is by far the busiest and most versatile port of passenger traffic in Finland. In 2018, a total of 12.1 million passengers travelled through the Port of Helsinki.
