NEW YORK: Likely to be released pre-loaded with Windows 10, the HP Pavilion x2 10… second-gen (?) doesn’t look quite as premium as Surface convertibles. But compared to its own predecessor, it definitely makes more sense when used in mini-laptop mode.
The keyboard docking station seamlessly attaches to the tablet body via a magnetic mechanism, and the 2-in-1 sits robustly in one’s lap, not looking like it could detach or even break at any time. Under the hood, the archaic Intel Bay Trail processor is replaced with a spanking new Atom x7 “Cherry Trail” that also coincidentally (not) beefs up the Surface 3.
A humble 2 gigs of RAM and cramped 32 GB storage drive should help HP keep the pricing bar low, which we figure won’t be easy, since the 2015 Pavilion x2 10 features state-of-the-art reversible USB Type-C connectivity in addition to a separate USB 3.0 port. And micro HDMI, and a micro SD card slot, stereo speakers, plus 12-hour or so battery life. Not too shabby for a hybrid PC tipping the scales at a measly 1.8 pounds, keyboard included.
