Huawei to take on Apple smartwatch: Launches Android 4.3 smartwatch with 286ppi resolution, 1.2GHz processor, 4GB ROM, 512MB RAM

BEIJING: Huawei has launched its new smartwatch to take on the Apple smartwatch. The new smartwatch by Huawei, which runs on Android 4.3 the device features a 1.4-inch Amoled display with a resolution of 400 by 400 pixels resolution (286ppi). It also includes a heart rate monitor sensor, a six-axis motion sensor, and a barometer.

The device, dubbed ‘Huawei Watch’ boasts a Qualcomm 1.2GHz processor plus 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM and Bluetooth 4.1 and is available in gold, silver and black.

The company said that more than 40 different watch faces will be available, along with a range of watch straps in different styles and materials. Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group said: “As the first smartwatch in our expanding line of premium wearable products, the Huawei Watch was designed and created to enhance and be part of consumers’ everyday lives.”

Smartphone makers are pinning their hopes on smartwatches as a way of generating new profits and further expanding their smartphone ecosystems (and the consumer loyalty they generate). However, consumers have shown limited interest in the devices so far.

Huawei also unveiled two other wearables, the TalkBand B2, and TalkBand N1. The TalkBand B2 combines a health-tracking band with a Bluetooth headset that can be popped out of the band to respond to a call.

Huawei claims it to be “ideal for on-the-run business executives who are athletically active.”

The device also features a six-axis sensor, dual microphones, and noise reduction technology can spot whether the Bluetooth earpiece is on the wristband or in the ear so it can automatically push audio (music or a call) to the smartphone or B2 bracelet.

TalkBand B2 supports devices with Android 4.0 operating system and iPhones with IOS 7.0 or above and it will come in three colours — black, silver and gold. The leather version has a recommended retail price of 199 euros, while the standard version costs 169 euros.

The company also unveiled its TalkBand N1, a Bluetooth headset featuring 4GB of local MP3 storage for 1,000 songs, Bluetooth calling, and sports tracking.
