BUDAPEST: The National Bank of Hungary (MNB) purchased a rare coin collection of silver Thaler coins minted in Transylvania between the 14th and 17th centuries, for approximately HUF 1.1 bln, Hungarian commercial channel RTL Klub’s news broadcast said yesterday.
Although the central bank did not name the seller, Hungarian weekly Figyelő reported that the seller of the rare collection is István Törő, managing director of the Judit Virág Gallery. Törő confirmed the report to RTL Klub yesterday and said that the collection consists of 216 coins.
RTL Klub sent questions to the central bank on the matter, and was told that all questions will be happily answered by the MNB at a press conference scheduled for Monday. The MNB has been on a spending spree of late, having recently bought paintings by Titian and Munkácsy and also a castle on the banks of the Tisza river.
