NEW DELHI: This summer, Russia and India may sign a contract for the design of the third and fourth power units for the Indian Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP), Valery Limarenko, head of Rosatom’s engineering company NIAEP-ASE, told media.
“We are currently negotiating a contract for the design (of the third and fourth power units). We expect that in the next month or two, this contract will be signed,” Mr. Limarenko announced during a press briefing at the Atomexpo-2015 Forum.
Russia, in accordance with an intergovernmental agreement of 1988 and the supplement to it, signed in 1998, will build in India the Kudankulam NPP. Today, the first power unit is by far the most powerful and safe in India, and meets all the latest modern safety requirements.
The power unit was connected to the national grid of India in 2013. It is now operating under the one-year warranty maintenance period, which will last until the end of 2015. Last spring, the Russian Federation and India signed a general framework agreement on the construction of the second phase (the third and fourth power units) of the nuclear power plant, and in December – the documents permitting the start of construction work.
The basis for the construction of the Kudankulam NPP is Project NPP-92, which fully meets the requirements of modern regulatory and technical documents of the Russian Federation, and the IAEA, and is certified for compliance with requirements of the European Utility Requirements Organization (EUR), which apply to nuclear power plants built after the year 2000. The principal feature of this project is to implement, in addition to conventional active safety systems, a number of technical solutions based on combined safety systems.
