NEW DELHI: Border Security Force has seized a huge shipment of cough syrup Phensedyl in Agartala in a special operation to curb smuggling of contrabands to Bangladesh. Based on intelligence inputs, officers and personnel of the 195 Battalion of the force made the seizure from two vehicles at Jogendranagar on the city outskirts.
“We intercepted a truck and a van that are carrying the consignment to deliver at a border location. One of the vehicles was damaged during the raid which occurred in the afternoon,” an official of BSF frontier headquarters told media.
The haul is estimated at Rs. 1 crore and if smuggled to Bangladesh would have fetched several times more. The official said Phensedyl addicts in Bangladesh prefer the cough syrup as a substitute of liquor which is banned there.
Hundreds of bottles were hidden in camouflaged containers.
Some of borders in Tripura are unfenced and they are widely used for smuggling from both sides.
The 195 Battalion of the BSF had earlier seized three truckloads of Phensedyl bottles on March 14 this year. Seized contrabands are destroyed under supervision of Customs and police.
