MUMBAI: Indian customs confiscated over 75,000 pairs of counterfeit sunglasses of different international brands at Mumbai Port Trust.
“We have seized 75,000 pairs of sunglasses of different brands like Ray Ban, Prada, Lacoste, etc from a container in Mumbai Port Trust that arrived from China last week,” the official of Special Investigation and Intelligence Branch of Mumbai Customs said. Based on specific inputs, a 40-feet container was intercepted at the port. “If sold in the open market as originals, the estimated worth of the consignment was around Rs 25 crore,” the official said.
Of the total, over 73,000 fake sunglasses carried the ‘Ray Ban’ logo printed on them. The consignment was imported by a company called Genius Trading Company.
“Initially we thought that the glasses were original, but after inspection carried out by the representatives of the respective brands, the seized items turned out to be fake,” said the official. “We would now investigate how long this illegal trade was going on,” the official said adding that part of the consignment was even slated to go to some prominent stores in the metropolis.
