NEW DELHI: Indian customs foiled another smuggling bid from across the border and seized 20 kg of heroin, two pistols, 17 cartridges, two magazines and two Pakistani mobile phones with SIM cards at the Wan border outpost in Tarn Taran district.
BSF spokesperson deputy inspector general (DIG) RPS Jaiswal said, “The troops were on high alert following intelligence inputs of smuggling from the Wan border outpost area. On the intervening night of April 13 and 14, an ambush was laid by the BSF troops and some suspicious movement of Pakistani smugglers was observed near the fence. The smugglers were trying to insert a plastic pipe into the fence. Movement was also noticed on the Indian side of the fence.”
He said the BSF troops challenged the smugglers and fired in self-defence. However, they managed to flee under the cover of darkness. A comprehensive search operation was launched and the BSF seized narcotics and arms, he said.
The border area has been put on alert following an attack by Pakistani smugglers on a BSF vehicle a few days back in the Amritsar sector. Three jawans were injured in the incident.
