New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said instead of only focussing on emission cuts, due credit should be given to efforts made for clean energy generation and conservation.

The Prime Minister, who chaired the first meeting of the Council on Climate Change, said Global awareness on climate change was an opportunity to improve the quality of life of the people.

He said that instead of focusing on emissions and cuts alone, focus should shift to what had been done for clean energy generation, energy conservation and energy efficiency, and what more could be done in these areas.

Minister for Environment and Forests and Climate Change later told reporters that the emphasis on green credits was very significant as it would count on so many initiatives taken by India to create carbon sinks through afforestation.

Mr Javadekar said the Prime Minister also called upon experts taking part in the meeting to project India’s contribution in the fight against climate change positively at world fora.

The Environment Minister said the meeting discussed a wide range of issues, including India’s intended nationally determined contribution and other issues that have to be settled on the road to the Paris conference.

The Prime Minister called for careful evaluation of all initiatives taken by India in this regard.

These include initiatives in solar energy, wind energy, biomass energy and transportation projects that have reduced distances or travel times.

The Prime Minister said India looked at the global concern and awareness on Climate Change as a great opportunity for working towards improving the quality of life of its citizens and making a positive contribution to mankind.
