India’s BSF seizes contraband gold, silver

NEW DELHI: India Border Security Force (BSF) has seized illicit gold and silver at Indo-Bangladesh border in different operations, said in the press release issued by BSF here the other day.

According to a statement released by BSF, 11 kilograms of gold and 12.48 grams of gold were seized during the operation. One Bangladeshi national was apprehended while trying to cross the international border with smuggled goods.

The troopers belonging to BSF’s 130 Battalion at the border check post near Mohanganj in Murshidabad district acted on a tip off. The personnel noticed a Bangladeshi national trying to cross the international border into India here the other evening. Upon suspicion, BSF personnel intercepted the person and questioned him.

The smuggler was identified as Milan Kumar Ghosh, 18 years of age, from Putia Bazar in the Rajshahi district of Bangladesh. Upon search, a gold plate weighing nearly 12.48 grams was seized from him. The culprit was later handed over to Raninagar police station for further interrogation.

In another operation, the troopers belonging to another BSF unit recovered nearly eleven kilograms of silver from Madhupur border area in Nadia district.

So far in 2014, BSF’s South Bengal Frontier force has seized nearly 94 kilograms of gold and 87 kilograms of silver. Also 44 smugglers have been apprehended in various operations. The value of the seized gold and silver is estimated at nearly Rs 26 crores and Rs 36 lakhs respectively.
