Portugal in 2018 had levels of consumption and of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita below the European Union average, ranked around the midpoint in the table of 28 EU member states.
With regard to Actual Individual Consumption (AIC) – the measure seen as best adapted to describe households’ material welfare – Portugal’s was in 2018 at 83 percent of the EU average, up from 81 percent in 2017. It is in the group of four countries that were between 10 percent and 20 percent below the EU average.
Portugal’s GDP per capita, meanwhile – a measure of gross economic output – was in 2018 at 77 percent of the EU average – as in 2017.
For both indicators, Portugal is 16th in the ranking of member states.
In 2018, AIC in EU member states ranged from 134 percent of the average, in Luxembourg, to 56 percent, in Bulgaria.
GDP per inhabitant, meanwhile, ranged from 261 percent in Luxembourg to 51 percent in Bulgaria.
