Ireland revenue officers seize 10,000 cigarettes

LIMERICK: Revenue officers with assistance from An Garda Síochana seized €6,750 in cash and 10,000 cigarettes with a retail value of over €5,250 as part of an intelligence-led operation in Limerick here the other day.

The cigarettes represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €4,100.

A vehicle was also seized in the operation.

The ‘M&J’ cigarettes and cash were discovered when a car was stopped and searched by officers in Limerick city. The cash was detained in accordance with the proceeds of crime legislation and a three-month detention order was granted this Wednesday at Limerick District Court to facilitate further investigations.

An Irish national in his sixties was questioned and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes.
