LOUTH COUNTY: The North’s Customs office, HMRC, revealed that a Cullaville man was fined £7,500 (€10,000) and given a suspended prison sentence at Newry Magistrates’ Court for waste offences relating to the discovery of fuel laundering waste.
Louth County Council’s contractors were tasked to Stephenstown, Knockbridge on Sunday where four cubes were dumped and removed them ahead of them being taken to Germany for treatment.
These containers, many of which were in poor condition and leaking, were found in agricultural out buildings adjacent to a private dwelling house. Samples of the sludge were found to contain a large percentage of diesel residue and were classified as hazardous waste.
FOUR more cubes of diesel waste were found dumped in County Louth earlier this week, while, in a separate incident, a South Armagh man was given a suspended sentence for waste-related offences at Newry Court on Monday.
On 29 May 2013, officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) visited premises at Concession Road in Cullaville, where they uncovered approximately 45 intermediate bulk containers containing fuel laundering waste.
The landowner, Hugh Carragher (52), was given a prison sentence for three months, suspended for two years, was fined £2,500 for each of the three offences to which he pleaded guilty, plus court costs of £31 and an offender’s levy of £15.
