LOS ANGELES: While inspecting a container en route to the Netherlands, Los Angeles port customs officials uncovered a rare 1967 Jaguar XKE convertible that had been missing for 47 years.
The Jaguar, stolen March 13, 1968, in New York, could fetch $23,600 in fair condition and $100,000 in excellent condition, custom officials said in a statement. The vehicle is being returned to its original owner, Ivan Schneider, who now resides in Florida.
Customs officials at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the busiest shipping complex in the United States, recover about 250 stolen vehicles per year, although that rarely includes collector’s items like Schneider’s Jaguar, according to Javier Larios, section chief officer of the US Customs and Border Patrol.
