SYDNEY: Lexus has edged a step closer to joining the V8 Supercars grid, partnering with the sport to supply the Safety Car, course car and medical car for the 2015 season.

The Japanese luxury marque has widely been tipped as the next manufacturer to follow Nissan and Volvo in entering the category.

The brand’s Australian chief, Sean Hanley, conceded last year they are evaluating an entry into the sport in 2017 after the Gen 2 Supercars regulations come into force.

Lexus’s high-performance RC F coupe will act as the series’ official Safety Car, while their GS 350 F Sport and IS 350 F Sport will act as the sport’s course and medical cars.

Hanley said the partnership with V8 Supercars was a fitting match for the brand.

“V8 Supercars is the world’s leading touring car series and our involvement as supplier of vehicles reflects the new energy in our brand and our dynamic model lines,” he said.

“This partnership is also the perfect opportunity to show Australian motorsport fans the new RC F, which is just as suited to driving on a track as it is on the road.”

V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton added: “We are proud and excited that Lexus has chosen our sport to showcase their high performance credentials.

“The stunning RC F safety car will be a feature of its own, and together with the IS 350 F Sport and GS 350 F Sport, we are absolutely delighted these ultra-high performance vehicles will be an integral part of V8 Supercars in 2015.”

The new Lexus Safety Car, course and medical cars will be on show during this weekend’s sydney.com SuperTest at Sydney Motorsport Park.
