TOKYO: LG Electronics, which is giving media the heads up that it plans to debut the world’s first 21:9 UltraWide gaming monitor with AMD FreeSync technology in Vegas.

The monitor in question is the LG 34UM67. As the model number implies, it’s rocking a 34-inch UltraWide panel with a Quad HD resolution (3440-x1440), giving gamers loads of horizontal real estate. In our experience with UltraWide monitors, they’re like using dual monitors, but without the distracting bezel or potential configuration headaches.

LG says the 34UM67 was specifically developed for graphics intensive gaming, hence the inclusion of AMD’s FreeSync technology. Similar to NVIDIA’s G-SYNC technology, FreeSync is intended to eliminate screen tearing that occurs when the monitor and graphics card are out of sync, resulting in a smoother and more fluid gaming experience without any hit to frame rates.

“AMD FreeSync technology is an innovative monitor technology, based on free and open industry standards, to eliminate the tearing and stuttering that has plagued PC gaming for 30 years,” said Roy Taylor, corporate vice president of ISV/IHV Partner Group, AMD. “We are pleased that LG Electronics stands with us with truly exciting AMD FreeSync-ready displays like the LG UltraWide Gaming Monitor.”

Other features include a Black Stabilizer to illuminate dark scenes, and Dynamic Action Sync mode, which is supposed to minimize input lag.

In addition to the 34UM67, LG plans on showing off three more displays at CES. The first is the 34UC97, billed as the first curved 34-inch 21:9 monitor, also in Quad HD. It sports an In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel with a claimed 99 percent coverage of the sRGB colour space and 178-degree viewing angle, along with Thunderbolt 2 connectivity so that Mac users can join the fun. Users can find it online for around $1,300 (street).

Next up is the 34UC87M, yet another 21:9 aspect ratio monitor that’s also curved. This one is aimed at working professionals and comes with various multiple display set-up options LG sees it being used as a trading workstation or large dashboard to display charts, quotes, and other work-based fare. This one is available for around $1,250 (street) online.

Finally, LG will roll out its Digital Cinema 4K Monitor (31M797) featuring a 4K resolution (4096×2160), offering more pixels than normal Ultra HD (3840×2160). This one boasts a claimed 99.5 percent coverage of the Adobe colour space and is aimed at users who need accurate colour management, like photographers.
