LHC orders departmental inquiry against 50 customs officials

LAHORE: A two-member bench of Lahore High Court ordered the departmental inquiry against the custom officers and ordered NAB to present reply.

During the hearing of the case the other day, the LHC ordered to submit the departmental inquiry report against 50 custom officers who were allegedly involved in tax evasion on import of betel.

The bench lead by Justice Mahmood maqbool Bajwa ordered to submit report on next date of hearing of the case. During hearing Umer Ahmad Khan advocate from Customs said that former DG intelligence and investigation revealed on March 11, 2000 that customs officials from grade 14 to 21 are involved in tax evasion of one Rs 1 billion in import of betel from Sri Lanka. The NAB had not yet submitted any inquiry an investigation report against the accused. Court adjourned the hearing for two weeks
