SEPANG: The Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle in drugs worth RM1.1mil and arrested a Pakistani woman at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

KLIA Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said the drugs, identified as methamphetamine, were neatly sewn between two flaps each of the 25 cushion covers.

Chik Omar said Customs uncovered the new trick to avoid detection, adding that the drugs were also sewn into the cushion covers with multiple designs and patterns.

“A 50-year-old Pakistani woman, who had arrived at the international arrival gate from Lahore, Pakistan, was arrested.

“When we scanned her luggage, we found that there was something amiss with the covers.

“A thorough inspection revealed that she was carrying about 6kg of methamphetamine,” he said at a press conference on Thursday morning.

Nik Omar said the housewife had told authorities that the cushion covers were meant to be samples for her customers.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
