SEPANG: The customs department thwarted attempts to smuggle 2.213kg of methamphetamine worth RM420,470, via parcels in three separate cases this month.

KLIA Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said the modus operandi was to smuggle the drug through express mail and send to false addresses using the name of locals.

“The three parcels were sent to Abdul Halim, Salim and Ahmad Sulaiman…the actual recipient would only take the package at the delivery company and get the ‘tracking’ numbers,” he said in a press conference here the other day.

Chik Omar said in the first case, a Nigerian man was detained at the Pos Laju Puchong branch on March 6, and he was believed to have been present at the location to claim the parcel.

He added that an examination of the parcel revealed it was sent from Nigeria and contained six cans of tomato puree, with four of them containing crystal white methamphetamine.

On March 19, another Nigerian man was nabbed in Cyberjaya on suspicion of having a parcel containing drugs.

“Investigations revealed the parcel, sent from Dongguan, China contained four closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, together with methamphetamine,” said Chik Omar.

He said in the third case, a parcel from Dalian, China addressed to a Kepong address was seized on March 21 at a courier company in Subang, Selangor.

It contained 20 folding umbrellas which were modified to conceal methamphetamine, he added.
