TAWAU: Malaysian Marine police foiled an attempt to smuggle out various controlled and subsidized goods valued at RM17,675 under the “Op Paradise” operation here the other day.

Sabah Marine Police Region 4 Commander, ACP Mohamad Madun, said Sunday that the seized goods included sugar, cooking oil, liquor and clothing.

“The goods were seized from two passenger ferries during an examination in the Tawau port area,” he said.

He said the goods were seized after it was found that there were no valid supporting documents and no one claimed ownership.

The goods were brought to the Tawau marine police base for further action, he added. The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

Meanwhile, Mohamad urged members of the public to be their “eyes and ears” by channeling information to the authorities on any suspicious activities in their respective areas.

“Smuggling activities not only incurs losses to the Government in terms of tax but also could lead to shortage of local supplies,” he said.
