WASHINGTON: The distance between Mars and the West Australian city of Perth is slightly closer for one man after being announced as one of the final 100 applicants for a one-way mission to the red planet.
While Mars is one step nearer for Perth man Josh Richards, there was no such luck for Korum Ellis, also from Perth, who did not survive the cull which saw the list of finalists cut down from about 700.
Mars One is a project that plans to create the first human settlement on Mars in 2024 while incorporating a reality style television coverage of the process.
Mr Ellis, a performer, whose gigs have included being a topless waiter and nude model, told Fairfax Media he would now have more time to focus on his interest in sustainable living by developing microfarm systems.
For Mr Richards who is down to the top 100 from about 200,000 applicants, it means further preparations for life on Mars.
“It’s been a very strange two and a half years getting to this point, but I’m very excited about what the next few months have in store with group testing and 24 of us being selected for full-time training starting in June/July.
