BERLIN: Mercedes has started work on a hardcore version of the all wheel drive super A-Class; the A45 AMG is currently the most powerful hot hatch on the market.

But with only 60 hp separating it from the Audi S3’s 2-liter turbo and a 370 hp RS3 Mercedes is re-sharpening its compact blade and getting ready for war.

Tobias Moers, the famous CEO of the AMG division has recently confirmed to Auto Express magazine that work has begun on a more hardcore version of the all-wheel drive super-A-Class.

The company is currently busy with the launch of the new C63 and the GT sports car, both of which are crucial to the future of the AMG brand. So development of the super-A45 will take several more years.

When it’s ready, the car is likely to feature an even more aggressively tuned 2-liter turbo engine, since Mercedes doesn’t have access to any bigger engines that would fit under the bonnet of the A-Class compact.

No hot hatch fans will ever car what Mercedes calls it, but they might be upset that development will take so long. Oh well, at least the people who have already bought an A45 haven’t made a bad investment.
