MEXICO CITY: Two young American women were in federal custody on suspicion of attempting to smuggle two Mexican men through the Interstate 8 checkpoint in Pine Valley, authorities said.
The men were found locked inside the trunk of the women’s 2006 Mazda 3 sedan as it attempted to pass through, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
“A K-9 team alerted to the car,” a CBP statement said. “Agents searched the vehicle and discovered … the men were tightly packed in the trunk, sweating profusely and unable to exit the car.”
The 21-year-old driver and her 21-year-old female passenger both U.S citizens were each arrested on suspicion of human smuggling, and the car was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol, according to the CBP, which did not disclose their names.
It was unclear whether the men suffered any lasting effects from being in the trunk.
