MEXICO: Federal prosecutors say a man from Mexico has been sentenced to nine years in prison for leading a ring to smuggle people into the U.S.
Prosecutors say 28-year-old Jose Isabel Paz-Martinez was sentenced Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in July to conspiracy to illegally bring people into the U.S., admitting the conspiracy resulted in a woman’s death. The court found he was a leader in the conspiracy.
Prosecutors say a 21-year-old woman from El Salvador was among a group being picked up in a truck driven by one of Paz-Martinez’s drivers last year. As she climbed into the back, the truck sped away. She fell onto the highway and then was run over by a tractor-trailer.
